Citylore: on-device facial recognition for a wellbeing habit.

A wellbeing app built with Python, Django, Django REST Framework, React and React Native, based on the mental and physical benefits of smiling. It uses facial recognition to register the act itself and tracks progress over time — a small behavioural idea that puts an unusually sensitive technology at the centre of the product.

The problem

The challenge.

  • The core interaction depends on facial recognition, which is among the most privacy-sensitive technologies a consumer product can use, for a purpose that is deliberately lightweight.
  • Recognition had to work across the range of faces, lighting and camera quality real users bring, not the narrow conditions a demo is filmed under.
  • The value only appears through repetition, so the daily interaction had to cost the user a few seconds and no more.
  • Progress tracking needed to feel encouraging rather than judgemental — a wellbeing product that makes users feel monitored defeats its own purpose.
The plan

Our approach.

  • Ran facial detection on the device and transmitted only the resulting event, never the image. A wellbeing app has no reason to hold a library of users' faces, and the cheapest way to protect biometric data is to never collect it centrally.
  • Kept the server model in Django deliberately thin — occurrences and progress, not imagery — so the sensitive data never enters the backend's threat surface at all.
  • Built the client in React Native so the camera interaction behaves consistently across platforms, with a React surface for the wider progress views.
  • Tuned detection sensitivity toward accepting genuine attempts rather than rejecting marginal ones, because a false rejection in a habit product costs a user's engagement while a false acceptance costs almost nothing.
  • Designed streaks and history to show accumulation rather than failure, avoiding the punitive framing that causes users to abandon habit apps after the first missed day.
The result

The outcome.

  • The biometric interaction never leaves the device, so no facial imagery is stored server-side.
  • The daily interaction is short enough to survive as an actual habit.
  • Detection tolerates ordinary conditions rather than requiring ideal ones.
  • Progress is presented as accumulation, which is what keeps people using a wellbeing product.

What partners
tell us.

Most clients renew for a second engagement. The ones who don't usually hire someone from our team to run the project in-house.

We are a mental health charity and not tech-minded. We needed to improve our patient registration system but wanted a company that we can relate to. Hassan took the time to meet with me and patiently went through our process to find a personalised solution for us. Hassan's team did a great job streamlining our process and connected our registration system to our patient management software. Whenever we have a glitch, they resolve this quickly. Enigmatix Global provides a personal and efficient service and we have adopted them to be our IT provider.

I am writing to wholeheartedly recommend Enigmatix Global as a premier bespoke software development agency. Our journey with them has been nothing short of exemplary, far exceeding our initial expectations. While many agencies can develop based on strict specifications, Enigmatix Global demonstrated an incredible commitment to our project that was truly unparalleled.

Dragonfly has been working with the team at Enigmatix Global for several years now on building out our web-based platform and APIs. One of their strengths is quickly building out a multi-disciplinary team to work on the development and delivery of features with different technical requirements. Their support has allowed us to accelerate our development work without building an internal team. They have also worked seamlessly with other third parties both during the acquisition of Dragonfly and development of our mobile app. Enigmatix Global has been instrumental in bringing our ideas to life and providing guidance to help us make the best technical decisions. I would recommend getting in touch with them if you're looking for support.

Frequently asked

Common questions, answered.

  • Yes. We provide software development, dedicated engineering teams, offshore development centres and staff augmentation for UK and US businesses. Our head office is in Rochdale, UK. US delivery is remote; we agree working-hour overlap and delivery responsibilities during discovery. Our US service-area pages describe the markets we serve, not US office locations.
